The My Beautiful Crown activity is a poster board collage activity (see images for example).
This activity and discussion set is designed to help Black boys embrace their hair choices while acknowledging the discrimination and prejudice that might occur for doing so.
The child chooses a character with a matching skin tone and proceeds to cut out the image and post it onto the board. They are then able to design a hairstyle that best represents them. They can use pencils, crayons, markers, or paint to draw their hair or use objects and other materials to design their hair on the board.
For the rest of the collage, the client will surround their image with positive words they feel best describes themselves and their hair (texture, color, etc.). It is recommended to provide a diverse collection of magazines for client use in developing their collage. Clients can extract words or images to add to their collage.
